Quando ormai il prototipo era pronto per i collaudi finali, il reparto corse decise di interrompere il progetto Le Mans cosi come già successo qualche tempo prima per il settore rally. Le cause furono molteplici; gli elevati costi di sviluppo per poter sfidare le Porsche 904 ad armi pari, la dirigenza dell'azienda che decise di investire in altri settori, l'incognita di trovarsi a lottare con auto progettate solo per le gare e quindi sulla carta più performanti.
A seguito di questa decisione in breve venne smembrato il reparto corse che seguiva sia le gare in circuito sia i rallyes. Tecnici, ingegneri e meccanici, furono dirottati a altre mansioni; qualcuno di loro in privato, continuò l'attività agonistica di Triumph. Fu così che tutto il layout GT6R viene reso disponibile per poter essere utilizzato come aggiornamento sulle Racing Spitfire ancora in circolazione. Da notizie attendibili, tutto il retrotreno e altri particolari della GT6R sarebbe finito sul telaio ERW412C di Bradley che nel 1966 disputò il Campionato Europeo GT. Sono arrivati ai giorni nostri lo chassis, il monoblocco motore e il particolare collettore di scarico in fusione di ghisa composto da due parti 3-1 e 3-1 che è visibile nella fotografia.
